HIGH-EFFICIENCY WIRELESS POWER TRANSFER SYSTEM FOR ELECTRIC VEHICLES

In the past few years, more and more portable electronics devices adopt wireless power transfer technology that allow them to be recharged without the trouble of plugging in. However, the wireless power transfer technologies are not limited to low power application. Wireless chargers for EVs are also being developed. While conventional plug in charging has certain advantages such as simplicity, inexpensive and high efficiency, they may pose a potential risk of electric shock to users if connecters are plugged or unplugged in a high humidity or rainy environment. Other issues that may affect their reliabilities includes insulation wear and oxidation/corrosion of metal contacts. The use of wireless charging can eliminate these concerns. This talk initially presents an overview of the speaker’s current research and continues by covering trends as well as the latest advances in power electronics field. The talk particularly focuses on wireless power transfer technology for electric vehicle charging systems, developed at Taiwan University of Science and Technology. Experimental results of a wireless charging prototype systems will be presented, discussing both challenges and future directions.

VERY HIGH FRAME RATE ULTRASOUND FOR MEDICAL DIAGNOSTIC IMAGING

Ultrasonography is widely used in clinical situations. It is suitable for various screening purposes because it can be performed repeatedly owing to non-invasiveness, no radiation exposure, and cost effectiveness. Furthermore, the temporal resolution in medical ultrasound imaging is much better than those in other imaging modalities, such as magnetic resonance imaging and X-ray computed tomography. Therefore, ultrasound imaging is also suitable for functional imaging, such as blood flow imaging and evaluation of the cardiac function. Recently, high frame rate ultrasound, which further enhances the temporal resolution in medical ultrasound imaging, has become available in practical use. High frame rate ultrasound enables more accurate analysis of tissue dynamics owing to its extremely high temporal resolution of over one thousand frames per second. In this lecture, methods required for visualization of tissue dynamical properties by means of ultrasound will be presented.

INTERNET OF THINGS FOR SMART COMMUNITY SOLUTIONS

Nowadays, Internet of Things (IoT) related researches are evolving rapidly and users are shifting from local servers to community data centers. Therefore, industries/researchers are desperately in need of solutions that can improve the lifestyle of people living in both urban and rural areas by incorporating IoT technology. The IoT technologies aim to build an Internet based infrastructure of smart machines/objects/things where each machine can interact/communicate with physical objects based on standard and interoperable communication protocols. As we know that, billions of physical objects will be incorporated in IoT networks by the year 2030. To enhance and facilitate the IoT infrastructure, we need to develop an efficient and reliable IoT stack to support and provide solutions for building a smart community. Therefore, in this talk we highlight the issues in building a smart community and offer their solutions based on IoT applications.
